Fauci and Masks
#1
A year ago according to the good doctor, they didn't help. Now he recommends wearing two!

You can't make this stuff up. . . .

Makes sense to me, if you are only using a loose surgical mask or a thin/ineffective cloth mask. Two masks should give you better filtration and hopefully a tighter fit. My parents have been using two masks since many months ago for the same reasoning, although I've bought them some KN95's  which is superior I think. Do you disagree that two masks could be better or just wanted to ridicule the "good doctor"?

At some point, too much filtration makes breathing such a problem that you're going to get blow-by (imagine wearing a Saran Wrap mask) out the sides of the mask and up past the nose. It also can cause a feeling of panic or at least distress that you aren't getting enough air, and the eventual irresistible urge to rip your mask off.

I did more manual labor than I'm used to in 105 degree heat last summer with a KN95 on. The sweat soaked the mask so air couldn't get through and I got very stressed. Thankfully I had a safe place to go (in a car) where I could take my mask off to catch my breath. But I realized that it was wise to carry a surgical mask as an alternate mask if I thought I might get stressed in some situation with my KN95. Better a surgical mask that is easier breathing than having to remove your unbreathable mask when you need to wear a mask.

I just want consistency from our experts. Too much to ask for?

Cloth masks were not available and there was not enough surgical masks for hospitals. I believe he felt that the priority was for the medical community and that consumers should not compete for this resource.

Yes, the inconsistency sucks.

So a year ago when little was known about COVID he said something and quickly changed his mind. And he subsequently spent the better part of a year consistently telling everyone to wear masks countless times, but somehow this is a problem?

The CDC position of "We don't recommend you wear face masks" lead to videos like this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdGTMfID...e=youtu.be
And here's WHO from that time

But Fauci isn't the CDC.  So, what about Fauci?  Well, the question about who knew what and when has been researched before.

Cardcrimson, just as with "don't recommend" (vs "recommend you don't"), one has to look to see EXACTLY what people say, not the impression that one gets from everything they say.

He made two similar phrasings on mask wearing on March 8, 2020 on "60 Minutes".
"Right now in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks."
"There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask."
Which one people quote seems to depend on their opinion, so I'm including both.

The direct "should not" statement isn't mentioned in this Forbes piece on what Fauci said when.

So, Fauci didn't say "masks don't help".

ThatBoy, Fauci didn't change his mind, quickly or otherwise.  He knew what he was doing.  He was telling people not to wear masks because he wanted the masks for other people that he felt needed them more.

So he intentionally mislead the masses in the early stages of the pandemic, when controlling the spread was essential. Lovely, especially as that message continued to be carried for months.

I understand he should have chosen his words more carefully or been more honest early on. My main point is that for nearly a year he and the CDC and just about every other scientist on the planet have since been consistent in their repeated mantra about wearing masks. If someone still has the wrong impression they are being willfully ignorant. My impression from many posts over the past year is that Cardcrimson himself has known since March of last year, if not sooner, that wearing a mask is important. Such criticism of Fauci might have been fair back in March or so. Ten or eleven months later it seems a bit gratuitous.

I think there is some implication that Fauci is not trustworthy and is to blame for lack of mask compliance. To a small degree that may be true. But my sense is that if Fauci had been replaced by someone deemed more credible it would make little difference. Anti-maskers and others who are not compliant don't care what the scientists are saying. People's attitudes regarding masks are almost a religious or political ideology.

So criticize Fauci all you want. I have no problem with that per se. Fire him and hire someone else. I don't care. I just think it's a bit of crocodile tears and disingenuous to imply he is giving mixed messages almost a year later.

My point is that he intentionally mislead the masses. Problematic, don't you think?

Also, he and the CDC and the WHO continually told us that the coronavirus wasn't transmitted via aerosols, when they all knew it was. That's pretty problematic too. There are no crocodile tears, just disappointment in the so called experts who can't be consistent.
